Another Federal Government Stimulus Payment, Not a Second Tax Rebate

Barack Obama Says Second Tax Rebates Won't Come, kconnors with MorgueFile
Learn who will get second federal government stimulus payments. Recipients of $250 stimulus checks include veterans & retirees. Another tax rebate not coming for most.

In the early days of the Obama administration, many Americans found themselves wondering, “When will we get a stimulus check in 2009?” Luckily for some individuals, President Barack Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 on February 17th which provides for one-time $250 economic stimulus checks for over fifty million people. This article explains who qualifies for 2009 stimulus payments and explains how these differ from the 2009 tax rebates.

Who Will Get a $250 Stimulus Check? Find Out Who Qualifies for the 2009 Economic Recovery Payment

In general, only recipients of Social Security & Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits from the Social Security Administration, railroad retirement beneficiaries who get checks from the Railroad Retirement Board, and recipients of certain veterans’ benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs are eligible for $250 stimulus checks.

Eligible individuals must meet the two main requirements below to qualify; only residents of certain states or U.S. territories and those who received benefits within a specific time period qualify for $250 economic stimulus checks.

  1. Benefits must have been received at some point between November 2008 and January 2009.
  2. Recipients must live in the following areas to qualify (address of record, not a temporary residence):

  • American Samoa
  • District of Columbia
  • Guam
  • Northern Mariana Islands
  • Puerto Rico
  • 50 United States
  • U.S. Virgin Islands
Veterans & Survivors – Who Is Getting a $250 Stimulus Payment from the Department of Veterans Affairs

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, in addition to the two criteria above, veterans must have received one of the following benefits to be eligible for 2009 stimulus payments:

  • Compensation
  • Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)
  • Pension
  • Spina Bifida

Social Security Administration Rules – Who Will Receive Another Federal Government Stimulus Payment

Nearly everyone who receives Social Security or SSI benefits is eligible for a $250 check. Although certain individuals are excluded, adult children who are recipients of disability benefits will get a check. Children who receive SSI benefits will also receive a $250 check. See the article Who Isn't Getting $250 Economic Stimulus Checks? for more details on who shouldn't expect a check from the Social Security Administration.

Railroad Retirees – Contact Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) for Further Clarification

Less information is available from the Railroad Retirement Board than from the other two organizations involved. Individuals who believe they are eligible under that program should check materials received from the organization itself to determine eligibility.

Economic Stimulus 2009 – No Second Tax Rebate for Most U.S. Citizens

Unfortunately, the 2009 economic stimulus package doesn’t provide for another tax rebate for the masses. The one-time $250 federal government stimulus checks are meant to help individuals with limited means weather the current economic downturn. A likely hope (of the U.S. government) is that individuals who receive these checks will spend this money and further stimulate the economy.

So, a 20yr old student loan (a 2000 student loan taken out in 1989) that hasn't been repaid (technically) will prevent a disabled vet from receiving this money? yes? or no?

correct.if you have a state bill or federal, it will off set your check.

Never depend on the government for much of anything. Basically you'll see it when you see it. If you do not receive by the final date, sure, call and complain. Complaining doesn't help. Those phone numbers are just that, a number. They are not the one handling the money.

I'm a vet with a service connected disability. It looks like the VA can't get even get this right...they've sent letters with different dates out. Some vets got letters saying June 10, some June 15, others July 10. I guess it's more hurry and wait from the federal govt. I'm sure they needed some more $1000 toilet seats or something but eventually the money will get to us.

Well it's the 16th and my letter said the 10th...no money from Nobama. guess we shouldn't expect a person who make over 2 mil in 1 year to really relate to the common man...and especially not the veteran.

I called the Va today at 1-800-827-1000 and asked about the recovery payment because I was reading on here different dates. My husband is a veteran and did not get a letter yet. So I was asking and they we very helpful and said letters we coming out slow. But everyone should have letters and checks by no latter than July 10 if not call back. Hope this helps.

Sorry, but not all Veterans will get this stimulus payment. Only Veterans who receive a monetary VA compensation or VA pension will receive the $250 stimulus money.
I also keep hearing Veterans complain about not getting the payment first. Are we (Veterans) that impatient or inconsiderate that we would expect to jip to the front of the line. Let us not forget our common courtesy and patriotic duties. Be considerate and let the others go first. Give your place in line for another who just may be in more need.
As Veterans some time of our life was spent sacraficing our own lives so that other Americans could be afforded greater benefits from the United States. Let us not forget, we are still proud Veterans who continue to serve this country of ours and the citizens within it.
I will patriotically step aside to let another get their's first. I need it just as much as the next guy, but I feel it is my duty to my fellow citizen to be patient.

I am a veteran rated at 10% disability, but have not received any money from the VA because they said since I received a separation pay for a certain amount, I would have to wait so many months for it to catch up before I recieve payment. So my question is even though I have been a disabled vet since 2007, but have not recieved a monthly payment yet, do I qualify for the stimulus Check?
Jun 17, 2009 11:54 PM

You can go to http://iris.va.gov/ or call 1-800-827-1000. On my letter it says July 10. I will just have to wait my turn.

I am 100% Service-Connected disabled and my letter said to expect check in June. Won't be a huge deal if it doesn't come until July but could sure use it this month. I am glad we were among the chosen to receive the stimulus.
While we earned our benefits through service to our country it still irks me to see people griping over trivial matters---most people in the VA do the best job they can so let's give them a big hand.

June 19 and nada so far. I hate to say it but, I'm to the point where I'll believe it when I see it. It probably wouldn't upset so many vets if it wasn't for the fact that SSI and others receiving stimulus checks got theirs a month ago. And to the sheep who recommend that we stay quiet, wait in line and take getting treated like an afterthought, thank goodness someone makes noise when it comes to the VA! Otherwise they would be even more out of control than they already are.

The only hand I want to give anyone at the VA is a hand smacked across their face... if they were doing the ”best job” they could we wouldn't have so many problems with the VA. It’s not a huge deal to you because you are getting paid as 100% disabled. Is it your brain that is disabled???….. Maybe that’s why you don’t see the problem! Oh another thing… here is an example of the great job they are doing at the VA: http://www.kxmc.com/getArticle.asp?ArticleId=389706 .

I am a VA employee as well as a 70% disabled Navy veteran. I have not received my payment yet either, but I can tell you that the employees that are handling this for us are working very hard to assure that every veteran entitled to it receives it. I know it is hard to wait, I could really use the extra money also, but it is not the employee's fault they are doing the best that they can to get them out I assure you. Being a VA employee is a thankless job sometimes and we take the rap for stuff that is out of our control. Please know that the employees are thinking and have thought of the veterans first before themselves.

This money was allocated to the V.A. from the federal Govt. back in May so there should be no reason for any eligible Vet to wait in line. The V.A. has it and all they have to do is send it out!! and I'm still trying to figure out why vets couldn't have received this stimulus back in may with everyone else.

Hi, I am 40 % rated. It is nice to know I am not alone. I have not received a letter or anything. Typical of the VA, hurry up and wait. We will hurry up and tell people they are getting money, but make them wait until the last possible minute (and maybe pass that)to give you what is yours. This is a great post though; nice to know it is not just me.
Jun 20, 2009 6:58 AM

I HAVE RECEIVED MINE! They never sent me a letter though, I just checked my account this morning and boom-there it was. (I am the 40% disabled vet that just wrote the other post about hurry up and wait.) Please check your accounts. Maybe they have dispursed payments to others today.

I got my $250 Stimulus check yesterday. Yay!!. Some people on here have sure become spoiled brats. Want, want, that is all they say. Watch out or pretty soon the public will get tired of your belly-aching and shut off the spigot.

I just got my deposite.. I actually had no idea what it was until I googled it. The way I see it is it's free money. Complaining about how you haven't been given something and that want it now.. seriously.. are you 16?
Anyways, times are tough. It's nice to take my wife out to dinner and not have to worry about not being able to make the month's bills.

I'm grateful for this gift, and I'm confused as to how some of you calls yourselves veterans. I'm disappointed with alot of your attitudes. This is supposed to be the government's gift to us in honor of how noble we all are, and what we gave up for our country.. yet some of you are bickering like children.

My name is Wilson, am a USMC Vet and I'm proud to have served my country. And I appricate MY country giving a little something out of respect to help ME.

The way the economy is going I think they will have to turn the spigot weather we belly-ach or not and as for getting $250 extra in a month would give all of us enuough to take our Wife out for a nice dinner well I have to tell you thats a little bit more to pay a few things off to keep the utilities turned on you have to understand a lot of us are on a very very tight budget and when we gat a letter saying we are going to recieve something we budget around that and when the va waits till the 11th hour to come through it can be very frustrating. I wish I had never got that letter. oh by the way I'm still waiting.

I think what's upsetting a lot of vets is the fact that they are almost an afterthought. I beleive that they were not even included in original drafts of the stimulas package and when they were included it wasnot to be sent out until everyone else included got theres in may. my mom got the social security stimulas in the first week of may and here it is the end of june and people are just getting theres now. I am not a vet and am not included on any stimulas but I can understand how they feel. They do not deserve to be treated like that.

I am a hundred percent disabled vet, single mom, and I have two dollars in the bank. I am not kidding. I sure wish I could go out to dinner but I have to pay bills and buy food. I am great full for the check, but it is getting hard to wait. My son accidentally unplugged the freezer and now we are running out of food. We have no meat, no milk, only caned and boxed food. I am over 40 years old and cannot provide anything for my kids to do for the summer except stay home and have friends over. I can not buy them a pizza or soda or anything.
I have waited my whole life for fairness in this world and was treated like crap during many years of service to my country so I am not ungrateful for the money but am not less deserving than anyone else. Neither are my children of whom are talking about joining the military against my advice. I am hungry and scared right now so I hope the check gets here soon.

For the mama who is 100% VA disabled, well you better start doing some better budgeting. You get $3,000 a month or close to it and your health care including travel is paid and your kids get health care through CHAMPVA. If you're still 100% when they start higher education you will be amazed at the benefits they get. If you haven't checked out all your benefits federal, state, and local, well do so. My property tax was cut 90%. There are a hell of a lot of people worse off than you---or me!! Got my check the other day.

When will you receive your $250 stimulus check?
Disabled veterans should receive their payment by July 10, 2009. If you do not receive it by then, you should contact the Veterans Affairs Administration by e-mail, letter, or phone. Be sure to include your VA file number (usually SSN) when you contact them. Here is the contact information:
•Internet: https://iris.va.gov
•Phone: 1-800-827-1000, or 1-800-829-4833 (TDD)
•Mail: Department of Veterans Affairs, 1240 E 9th St, Cleveland OH, 44199

Ok, I called the VA and the guy that answered told me the schedule that it is being done.

It goes by the last two...

00-49 were processed between the 15th and 17 of June and deposited/checks cut 22-24th..

50-99 will be processed on the 30th and deposited probably on the 7th of July (of course).

Its coming....

you know when i'll thank you VA people? when you all collectively complain or strike about how bad the operations are there, especially at Region.

frankly, except for a small (would have to be newly specialized) hospital, he entire VA system ought to be torn down. SS is far larger and does a far better job, and that ain't saying much.

As I read each post. Most of the people here wrote something as if the government OWE you something. They don't owe you anything. If you served in a service, 99% percent of you joined by your own freewill. Stop being a cry baby and grow up. And to one particular person that blames Obama, you seriously need to get help. I think you have a mental illness and are taking things personal. It sounds like you live a life of blame. You surely need to grow up and take responsibility and get a JOB if you want to money. You're waiting on a check as if it's going to fix your lives. Most of you sound worse than someone on welfare. I work and I'm a veteral. I still pay taxes, so think of it that you only getting .01% of what you pay in taxes. If you want to blame someone for not receiving your check, look in a mirror and blame yourself. Your paying yourself. PEACE
