The most logical place to look for information regarding $250 stimulus checks is the appropriate agency website; however, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) didn’t post very much information online regarding this measure.

The VA website indicates that payments to veterans would be sent out beginning in June 2009, but gives no indication when veterans should become worried if no payment appears. A search of the Department of the Treasury (treasury.gov/recovery) and recovery.gov websites reveals much more.

The Department of the Treasury published a document entitled “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Program Plan: Economic Recovery Act Payments” (dated May 15, 2009) where the agency divulges details about the economic stimulus payments for veterans and retirees.

When Will Veterans & Retirees Receive 2009 Economic Stimulus Payments?

Among the items detailed in the Treasury document above are expected completion dates for disbursing payments to Social Security Administration (SSA), Railroad Retirement Board, and VA payees. According to this expected timeline, recipients of SSA payments should have received their money in May 2009; eligible railroad retirement beneficiaries should have received stimulus payments in May as well. The Department of Veterans Affairs payees should expect payments by June 30, 2009.

2009 VA Stimulus Check Timeline – June 9th or June 30th?

One stimulus plan document on the Treasury’s website indicates that veterans should expect their $250 stimulus checks by June 9, 2009; however, the conflicting date noted in the program plan mentioned above as well as the number of comments to the contrary in response to the article $250 Stimulus Checks for Veterans & Retirees, leads this author to believe that the June 30th deadline noted above is more accurate.

Allowing Time for Federal Government Recovery Payments to Arrive

As noted in the article Who Isn’t Getting $250 Economic Stimulus Checks, Social Security beneficiaries whose checks should have been mailed in May were asked to wait until June 4th to call the SSA regarding a missing check. If the same pattern holds true, vets who should be mailed (or electronically transferred) a check in June should wait until July 4th to call about a potential mistake. Due to the holiday, veterans may even need to wait a bit longer than that before calling the VA to inquire about a missing stimulus payment, in order to allow time for the payment to arrive.

Obama’s Recovery Payment Information – Social Security & Railroad Programs

Since most Social Security and Railroad payments should have been made by now, it’s possible that anyone who expected a check but didn’t receive one was not actually eligible for a payment. The Railroad Retirement Board asked that individuals wait until June 8, 2009 before calling about a payment that wasn’t received. This was to allow enough time for checks mailed in late May to arrive at their final destination. Therefore, anyone who expected a check, yet did not receive one, from the Railroad Retirement Board should now contact the RRB at 1-877-772-5772.
