New Fashion Police Site Slams Wal-Mart Shoppers

Sep 14, 2009 Christopher Pascale

Wal-Mart shoppers are finding out that their fashion faux pas could get them worldwide publicity.

Earlier this month, a new website made national headlines by outing fashion criminals.

This new fashion police site, PeopleofWalmart.com, goes out and seeks people at Wal-Marts everywhere who stand out considerably. As described on the site, "it's not everywhere that you can shop for milk at 10 a.m. next to a 400 lb mother of six wearing a tube top, leopard tights, and hooker heels."

Another Attack on Wal-Mart?

The world's largest retailer is often at the forefront of criticism. There have been numerous books, articles, essays, and op-ed pieces discrediting Wal-Mart. This site, however, is not one of them.

On the site, it is clearly spelled out that the site's creators shop at Wal-Mart, and like it there. They just happen to think it's amazing when they see certain types of people. Having gained much joy from the sights they have seen, they wanted to share them with others, and hope that many will do the same.

Wal-Mart Shoppers Are in on the Excitement

Those who feel that the site is making fun of all Wal-Mart shoppers are in a tiny minority, and perhaps a member of those who have made headlines elsewhere as a result of the meteoric rise that has taken place on the site.

While PeopleofWalmart.com is less than a month old, it has 30 pages of photos. And with so many shoppers, it is very likely they will reach 100 before the year is out.

Today, for example, a photo is posted of an obese man wearing a t-shirt that says 'I hate queers' on the back of it. While it is possible that strange people do not like him either, it is not as likely that another grown man would have decided to go out late last week wearing a purple wool cap, tank top, and his underwear on the outside of his pants, but that's what had happened in Kentucky on September 10th.

What Does This New Fashion Police Site Really Mean?

While the low comedy and high laughs are great, there is something else here. With the Internet, the world has gotten smaller.

While estranged relatives are in such a state for many different reasons, some of them may be found on PeopleofWalmart.com. The butts of many of these jokes belong to someone. They are definitely sons and daughters, and possibly mothers and fathers.

While the average Wal-Mart shopper cannot go through a checkout line without seeing what's the new news on John and Kate Gosselin, or how the stars of the Twilight movies are 'risking it all' for their love, they are now doing so with the hopes that their cell phone cameras will catch the next big picture for PeopleofWalmart.com.

And many cannot wait to see what it is going to be.
