Break Room Live with Maron & Seder CanceledWeb Only Politics and Comedy Chat Show Axed by Air America Media
The following review was written a few short months before Break Room Live with Marc Maron & Sam Seder was canceled, foreshadowing a certain fate.
Filmed, or video-taped, or digitally-recorded, or whatever 21st century terminology is used to indicate that a show is being transferred onto the viewer's computer for consumption via the internet, Break Room LIve originates from the very bowels of the Air America corporate offices in New York City. Hosted by two exiles cast off from the early days of Air America Radio, now Air America Media, Sam Seder and Marc Maron sit hunched over a make shift desk situated literally in the break room of the Air America offices, where leftist worker bees and the occasional on-air personalities come and go, grab a cup of coffee and/or snack, stop momentarily to engage the hosts in a bit of repartee, before returning to the work of the people. Talking Politics In The Break RoomThe show mostly consists of the two guys talking extemporaneously about politics, but not before their regularly scheduled sketch or cold opening leads into their respective pre-written diatribes, the Maron Mill and the Sede Feed. Interspersed throughout the chat and the rants, are funny running bits involving Sam Seder's excursions into the wilds of New England preparing for the coming apocalypse, called Survival Sam; an entertaining series of videos of Marc Maron preparing food while raging against the world (and his ex-wife) entitled The Angry Chef; satirical vignettes skewering the Right and the self-righteous; as well as serious-minded interviews with authors and politicos. Seder/Maron, Early Air AmericaSam Seder, formerly of The Majority Report with Janeane Garofalo (also a frequent guest on Break Room), is in all seriousness, a sharp student of world affairs, and brings a great deal of gravitas to the occasionally low-brow proceedings; sort of like the funniest, coolest Poly Sci professor you never actually had in college. Where as Marc Maron, who hosted one of the great shows on Air America or any other radio network, Morning Sedition (which ran from April 2004 to December 2005), is a topical comedian, in the vein of Mort Sahl and Lenny Bruce. And if Sam Seder is BRL's special envoy to national and international affairs; Mr. Maron will be your cultural attache, bringing a decidedly pop culture sensibility, complete with movie reviews; and often ending the show with, gasp, a poem. I.M. Seder/Maron, The Post-Show ChatEnding every show with the post-show chat, Seder and Maron give out their instant message and email addresses in order for their viewers to ask questions regarding the day's topics, or to instigate further debate. This part of the show can sometimes be the most entertaining; as when instant messengers begin to needle the thin-skinned Maron; or baffle the unflappable Seder. More than anything, the post show chat is what can truly make watching an engaging and informative show like this different, and better, because it is online. An opportunity has arisen, to get in on the ground floor, to become a charter member, of a growing and progressively expanding audience of liberal-minded fans of BreakRoom Live; to be one of the cool kids, and claim to have been there when the cult began, like those who knew they had found something special and unique in the Fall of 1988, with Mystery Science Theater 3000. UPDATE: Break Room Canceled! On Wednesday July 15th, 2009, after less than a year on the air, Air America Media axed another much-loved program from the network's constantly in-flux line-up. Citing financial reasons, the bean-counters at Air America claimed Break Room Live to be an unprofitable endeavor, and thus chose to sacrifice the show's loyal cult following.
