Charlie Sheen's Controversial Comments About the 9/11 Attacks

Celebrity Charlie Sheen is known more for his embarrassing personal behavior than his political views, but his recent comments about the 9/11 attacks could change that.

In a recent interview with PrisonPlanet.com, Charlie Sheen declared his staunch belief that the brutal acts of September 11th, 2001 were perpetrated by the federal government. During the course of the interview, he demanded a meeting with President Obama to discuss his views and described a fictional 20 minute exchange between himself and the President in which he explains his theory of how the events September 11th truly progressed.

Many major news outlets have described Sheen's statements as indicative of the growing ranks and bravado of the "fringe movement" and a number of conservative groups have already denounced the actor's comments as anti-American, extremist, blasphemous, etc.

This article will not concern itself with the validity of Mr. Sheen's claims, nor will it endeavor to explain the number of supposed inconsistencies in the official story of the 9/11 attacks. It will, however, attempt to illustrate the almost preternatural stupidity displayed by the 9/11 Truth Movement in allowing Charlie Sheen to become the public face of their cause celebre.

Traditionally, organizations that deal in conspiracy theories have been viewed with the same skepticism that they espouse toward established historical fact. They are given little, if any, credibility by the mainstream media and their membership rolls often contain individuals of such dubious personal credibility that the fact they are able to take themselves seriously is shocking to most outsiders.

A group such as 9/11 Truth could bolster the plausibility of its contentions by choosing a respected figurehead with impeccable credentials and the capacity to calmly articulate their concerns without coming across as a raving psychotic whose real motivation is revenge and whose ultimate aim is the dismantling of the national power structure. Enter Charlie Sheen.

The Sordid History and Embarrassing Behavior of Celebrity Charlie Sheen

Mr. Sheen's alleged personal demons include chronic drug use, degenerate gambling habits, and an ongoing addiction to prostitutes. His personal history is littered with self-destructive debris including, but not limited to, a stint in rehab, two failed marriages, and reams of toxic publicity describing, in detail, innumerable personal acts of depravity rivaling the most abject vitiations of Caligula. But he is, after all, a movie star. Since the publication of his aforementioned interview, he has also become the most visible advocate of the 9/11 Truth Movement.

Sheen's interview has garnered more press coverage of 9/11 Truth than any event in recent memory, and while Sheen holds no official title within the non-profit organization, their names have become inextricably linked. The interview is expected to provoke a backlash from those usually willing to humor the ravings of conspiracy theorists, as long as they are relegated to the underground press and kept to an appropriate decibel level.

Tough questions are coming from the silent majority and Charlie Sheen is not the man to field them. The irreparable damage he could inflict on the cause he seems so desperate to further could set the movement back years.
