Medved's Ten Big Lies

America’s “Cultural Crusader” Defends America from Falsehood

Feb 20, 2009 Isaac M. McPhee

Through his daily radio show heard throughout the United States, Michael Medved has built a reputation of being one of talk radio's most intelligent and informed pundits.

Now, with the 2008 release of “The 10 Big Lies About America,” Medved follows up on his previous bestsellers, such as “Hollywood vs. America,” “The Shadow Presidents,” and “Right Turns.”

In this bluntly-titled tome, Michael Medved takes on, as his subtitle claims, “Destructive Distortions About Our Nation.” Those “lies” that he attempts to combat send him headlong into some of the most heated topics in the history of the United States.

From Slavery to the Economy

A casual reader glancing through “The 10 Big Lies About America” would surely be startled by some of those falsehoods and half-truths that are addressed here, for they are all taken directly from the history books used to teach American students or the media by which the majority of the public gets their cultural information.

For example, Big Lie #2 is that “The United States is Uniquely Guilty for the Crime of Slavery, and Based Its Wealth on Stolen African Labor,” while Big Lie #6 (a most fitting topic in today’s world) says that “Government Programs Offer the Only Remedy for Economic Downturns and Poverty.”

For those Americans who have spent much of their life being told that America’s past has little to no redeeming value as a result of the crime of slavery, or for those who were raised to believe that Roosevelt’s New Deal was uniquely responsible for getting America out of the great depression, to be told that these statements are lies, along with others which have to do with Native American Genocide, Imperialism, Multiculturalism, and the Separation between Church and State, goes against much of what is taught in today’s society.

The Value of the Argument

As anyone who listens regularly to his talk show will readily attest, the value of Michael Medved’s perspective on politics and pop culture has much less to do with his willingness to be blunt and provocative and more to do with being informed and intelligent.

Though missing is the entertaining banter between Medved and the disagreeing guests which so often grace his program, remaining are those detailed and well-researched arguments which have earned him much acclaim over the years. While the lies being confronted throughout this book may seem like perilous territory, anyone who reads the entire book will undoubtedly find themselves agreeing more often than not with his conclusions; or having a very difficult time grasping on to their disagreements.

The value of this book, as should be the case with any book dealing with such important subject matters, is in the lessens that it teaches, and in “The 10 Big Lies About America” are presented lessens of the most profound sort, most of which deal with how Americans view their nation. Michael Medved encourages his listeners and his readers to love their country, to learn from its past, and to be optimistic about its future.

But first it is necessary to bring these lies into the light.
