Meghan McCain Should Consider Going AwayFormer Presidential Candidate's Daughter Seems to Loves Attention
While she aims to position herself as a fresh young GOP voice, Meghan McCain comes across as caring more about getting publicity than fixing what ails Republicans.
Meghan McCain claims to be a proud young Republican who truly cares about leading the GOP out of the political wilderness. She wants to make it relevant again, especially to young people. In doing so, McCain has managed to generate numerous headlines and seems to show up everywhere. It is beginning to feel like she cares more about seeing her name in print than assisting the GOP in positioning itself as a viable party in the near future (something it is not at the present time). Ann Coulter and Karl Rove Are Obvious and Easy TargetsMcCain has specialized in going after easy targets. It is hardly daring to attack Ann Coulter, a figure with few rivals when it comes to an ability to polarize. Saying you have a beef with Coulter is akin to stating that in high school you hated the loudest, meanest person in your class. Following her Coulter attack, McCain got herself into a little back and forth with conservative radio host Laura Ingraham. Ingraham made an unkind remark about McCain's weight and McCain responded by teeling Ingraham to kiss her backside. More recently, McCain's targets have been Karl Rove and Dick Cheney, two of the most disliked men in the entire GOP. She pleaded with them to "go away." She went on to say that Republicans like herself are looking for "new energy and new blood." McCain Not Necessarily Wrong, Just OverexposedIt is not that McCain is wrong in all of this. Coulter is an evil human being and it would be nice if Cheney and Rove went away. Rather, her constant desire to state the obvious and "rattle" the GOP has gotten tired. For starters, the GOP establishment is hardly frightened of John McCain's daughter calling out people like Ann Coulter and Karl Rove. They likely view her as an annoying little pest seeking some attention. Also, the GOP does not need anyone to tell them that they need to rethink their strategies and platform. They are perfectly aware of the fact that Democrats have utilized technology far better than they have. They know that they are losing young people at an increasing rate. None of this is news. Stick to Writing Daily Beast ColumnsRather than attempt to wage war as a political operative, McCain would be better off sticking to her blog and The Daily Beast. She is a talented writer. Her piece for The Daily Beast on her dating life is a great read. You can find it here www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-03-02/looking-for-mr-far-right/. In no way is this an advocation for McCain to completely shut up and stop sharing her opinions. McCain may genuinely care about her party and its future, and by extension the future of this country. However, her tactics should be reconsidered, and maybe she should stay quiet for a while. When you continually say things that make simple sound bites and publicly take on much-maligned individuals like Cheney and Rove, you tend to come across as caring more about getting your name in the media than anything else.
