With the death of Senator Kennedy, the spotlight is on the next generation of the family. Most of them are involved in some form of public service.
The children of John, Robert, and Ted Kennedy, and those of Jean Kennedy Smith, Patricia Kennedy Lawford, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver have had some problems in their lives, but have overcome them and are productive members of society. Many of them are involved in public service and non-profit organizations and maintain the legacy of their parents. Many of them speak around the country about civil rights, the environment, drug abuse and other topics. While they each have their own families, they are the next generation of the Kennedy family tree. There is always speculation about which one will be the next Kennedy to seek a higher office. Some have dabbled in politics already, perhaps setting themselves up for a future bid. John Kennedy Jr. (born 1960) died in a plane crash in 1999. The Children of Robert and Ethel Skakel KennedyKathleen Kennedy Townsend (born 1951) was the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. She lost her bid for governor. She is an author, and founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Awards. Joseph Kennedy III (born 1952) was a three-term congressman from Massachusetts. He started and runs the Citizen Energy Group which provides discount heating oil for low income people. He has been critized for his alliance with Citgo, a subsidiary of the state-run Venezuelan oil business. Venezuela's president is a foe of the United States. Robert Kennedy Jr. (born 1954) is an environmental activist, attorney, and author. He is an environmental activist and the Chief Prosecuting Attorney for Riverkeepers, which cleaned up the Hudson River in New York among other successes. David Kennedy (born 1955) died in 1984 of a drug overdose. Mary Courtney Kennedy (Courtney) (born 1956) was a representative of the United Nations AIDS Foundation. Michael Kennedy (born 1958) died in 1997 in a skiing accident. Mary Kerry Kennedy (Kerry) (born 1959) is an attorney, author, and a human rights activist. She established the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights and is the chair of Amnesty International Leadership Council. Christopher Kennedy (born 1963) is a businessman and head of a company that manages properties in Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Matthew Maxwell Kennedy (Max) (born 1965) is an author, civil rights and environmental activist. Douglas Kennedy (born 1967) is a journalist. Rory Kennedy (born 1968) is a documentary filmmaker. She was born six months after her father was assassinated. The Children of Ted and Joan Bennett KennedyKara Kennedy (born 1960) is a producer for Very Special Arts, a non-profit organization which helps young people in the arts with disabilities. Teddy Jr. (born 1961) is an attorney and entrepreneur. He is on the board of directors of the American Association of People with Disabilities. Patrick Kennedy (born 1967) is a congressman from Rhode Island. The Children of Robert Sargent and Eunice Kennedy ShriverRobert Jr. (born 1954) is a city council member in Santa Monica. He is an attorney, journalist and activist. Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger (born 1955) is the first lady of California. She is a journalist and an author as well as a spokesperson for Alzheimer’s. Timothy (born 1959) was a teacher and is chairman of the Special Olympics which was started by his mother. He is on the board of the American Association on Mental Retardation. Mark (born 1964) was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. He founded The Choice Program which helps inner-city youth. Anthony (born 1965) founded Best Buddies International. William (born 1960) is a doctor and helped establish Physicians Against Land Mines. Amanda (born 1967) is a doctor. Kym (born 1972) works in New York. The Children of Peter and Patricia Kennedy LawfordChristopher (born 1955) is an actor, author, and substance abuse activist. Sydney (born 1956) is a mother of four.
