U.S. holidays and observances in September 2009 include Labor Day, the Jewish high holidays, the Muslim celebration Eid ul-Fitr, and the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

What's going on in September 2009? Here's a list of U.S. holidays and observations in the ninth month of the year.

Labor Day: September 7

Labor Day, which always falls on the first Monday in September, falls on the late side in 2009. It is the only U.S. federal holiday during the month of September. A federal holiday since 1894, Labor Day was established to honor working Americans, and it has ever since with a day off. Although the last day of summer in 2009 in actually September 21, Americans generally see Labor Day as the unofficial end of summer. For many students, it marks the beginning of the school year.

September 11

Although September 11 is not a national holiday, the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks is widely seen as a solemn day to remember the event. The day has been recently designated federally as the National Day of Service and Remembrance, and is also known as National Patriots Day. To mark the 8th anniversary of the tragedy, family members will read the names of all the victims at the former site of the World Trade Center. Similar remembrance ceremonies will be held at the Pentagon and at the site in Pennsylvania where United Flight 93 crashed.

Jewish High Holidays

On the Jewish calendar, September marks the beginning of the year 5770. Rosh Hashanah, which is the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown this year on September 18, 2009. The next ten days are known as they holidays. These end with Yom Kippur, the solemn Day of Atonement, which begins at sundown this year on September 27, 2009.

Eid ul-Fitr

For Muslims, this is the day after Ramadan, which begins in 2009 on August 22 and ends on September 19. Eid ul-Fitr, which falls ion September 20, 2009, is a day of forgiveness, unity, and celebration of piety.

Family Holidays in 2009

Grandparents Day, which falls annually on the first Sunday after Labor Day, will be celebrated on September 13, 2009. Stepfamilies Day falls this year on September 16, 2009. On a related note, National Pet Memorial Day falls on September 12.
